A brand-new addition to the Careers by Colour (Pty) Ltd career centre portfolio has officially been completed! The Ceramics Career, Science and Resource Centre was proudly completed, commissioned and officially handed over to the Ceramic Industries Group in October 2026. The Centre will open its doors to visitors early in 2027, creating an exciting new space where learners, young people and visitors can explore careers, discover opportunities, build knowledge and connect their interests to the world of work.
The future of career discovery is taking shape – and the journey starts here! It is the first centre where learners exclusively use the Careers by Colour app with exciting, ultra-creative career guidance content and advanced technology-based self-assessment techniques. The app, a well-researched, custom developed interactive digital tool was created by Careers by Colour (Pty) Ltd as a web-based application to enable users to participate in a personalised career decision making process. Learners visiting the Ceramics Career, Science and Resource Centre are individually issued with tablet computers to access the app. They complete a validated self-assessment questionnaire and create a personal interest profile. The outcomes of the interest assessment assign users to, in priority order, the three (of the six) colour-coded career categories best matched to their individual profile. The app provides users with access to relevant informative video clips and enables them to explore the individual careers available in each of the career categories. A personal report is e-mailed to individual users, and they will have access to related app content for a period of twelve months.
The app aims to help create an enlightened, knowledgeable youth empowered to make informed career decisions to enhance employment and wealth creation. It strives to address the imbalance between skills shortages in certain employment categories and the growing pool of unemployed young people. The App furthermore sensitises learners about the new world of work and career opportunities in, for example, the 4th Industrial Revolution working environment which offers career opportunities in new fields such as artificial intelligence, robotics and the Internet of Things.
The Careers by Colour model uses a group-based methodology with individual participation, ensuring that learners engage together while developing their own understanding of their interests, abilities and career options. Each learner therefore receives an individual activity workbook. The workbook provides structured activities that guide learners as they interact with the different media platforms and resources available in the Centre. The activities support the learning outcomes of the South African National Curriculum Statement (NSC) and help learners develop the knowledge, skills and competencies expected from participation in career guidance.
The workbook also provides a structured way for learners to record, organise and reflect on their career research, exploration and decision-making process. This helps them move from discovering who they are and exploring possibilities to identifying suitable education, training and career pathways. An Educator Section is included, providing suggested assignments, marking rubrics and assessment guidance. These activities can be used to support and contribute to learners’ Life Orientation Portfolio requirements. In this way, the workbook becomes more than a collection of activities – it becomes a personal career exploration record that learners can use to guide their next steps.
The Ceramics Career, Science and Resource Centre is also customised for school outreaches.
